Daniela Ryf defends IM 70.3 title in South Africa

Daniela Ryf, triple Ironman and 70.3 Ironman world champion, still has two goals this season: to claim her fourth world titles at the 70.3 World Championship in South Africa and  Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

Daniela Ryf is unbeaten this season. Her previous races in Rapperswil, Frankfurt (European Championship), Zurich and Gdynia, Poland were dominating performances. Ryf has been in high altitude training camp in St. Moritz, Switzerland, for several weeks, continuing her preparations for the World Cup in South Africa. "I am very tired. We train to the limit every day," says Ryf. "But that's what makes me feel good about being ready."

The last days of training will be spent in even higher altitude in the Upper Engadine area, before she travels to Port Elizabeth, South Africa on 28 August for the world championship. As usual, Ryf has not yet studied the starting list in detail, but she expects the best athletes at the start of the presitigous race, which will be held on Saturday 1 September, with the men's race held the following day.

Daniela Ryf knows course from last year when she won the Ironman in Port Elizabeth in early April 2017. "The people are extremely open and relaxed, the atmosphere is great. The swim can be very exhausting, as it can be quite windy. The bike route leads partly through the interior of the country and heads back along the coast. It's a hilly bike course, but the run is quite flat, which means it's hard and fast.“

The World Cup will take place in South Africa for the first time.
